Fleur De Lis - Meaning and History of Symbol
The Fleur-De-Lis, or Fleur-De-Lys as it is sometimes spelled, is likely a stylized iris flower as a direct translation of the name means "lilly flower". This ornamental design can be used both decoratively, as in interior design, or symbolically as a political or dynastic emblem. During the Middle Ages, the fleur de lis was overwhelmingly present in artwork, especially religious art. In some scriptures, the lily flower symbolizes chastity and purity. It has been seen on European coats of arms and flags over the centuries, but is now most closely associated with the French monarchy, however not as an official symbol.
In North American areas that were originally settled by France, such as Quebec in Canada or Nova Scotia, the fleur-de-lis is often a local symbol. In the USA, cities such as New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Lafayette in southern Louisiana, Louisville in Kentucky and St. Louis in Missouri use the fleur-de-lis. It is said to have been modeled after the lotus or iris and some believe that its three petals symbolize the Holy Trinity. Today, the fleur de lis is the recognizable symbol of Scouting organizations and has been adopted by a variety of sports teams as their logo.
