LED Night Lightbulb Advantages & Drawbacks

It's a whole new world of lighting out there. Carefully check packaging before buying to be sure your replacement LED bulb can be used in your night light base.

Things to Note When Choosing the Best LED Bulbs for Night Lights

  • Dimmable - Some LED nightlight bulbs can be used with dimmers while others cannot.
  • Enclosures - Many LED night light bulbs can't be used in enclosed fixtures. Be sure to read the caution section on packaging when selecting replacement LED night light bulbs.
  • Beam Direction - If bottom of bulb is not clear or light is emitted upward only (both effects noticable on Feit bulb above), your decorative night light will not be lit evenly.
  • Flickering Effect - Some brands of LED bulbs flicker. Flicking gives a twinkling effect when used in quantity but is generally not desirable in a decorative night light. LED bulbs tend to strobe or flicker when placed in automatic or light sensor bases.

Night Light Bulb Types

Night Light Bulb Types

The amount of light given off varies greatly depending upon the night light fixture you select.

*Incandescent Bulbs - The traditional night light bulb gives off a warm glow that provides a homey feel
*LED Bulbs - New energy-efficient bulbs last for years and use a fraction of the electricity of incandescent bulbs
*Clear vs. Frosted Bulbs - If the bulb is visible a frosted bulb makes them easier on the eye

Night Light Bulb Shapes & Sizes

Night Light Bulb Shapes & Sizes

Bulb Base - Standard night light bulbs have an E12 base (12mm). The metal part of the lightbulb is 0.47" across (12mm) and .65" tall.

Bulb Shape - Typically, a candelabra shape bulb is used in night lights although straight-sided bulbs may also work. Candelabra bulbs are shaped like a flame, with a narrow base that spreads out in the middle then tapers to a point at the top.

*S6 Bulb, 1.875" tall x .75" wide with straight sides (.36W LED shown)
*C7 Candelabra Bulb, 2.25" tall x 1" wide (0.5W LED shown)
*CA-10 Candelabra Angular Bulb - slightly bent tip, 3.9" tall x 2.31" wide (15W incandescent shown)

Bulb Height - A standard candelabra night light bulb is 2.25" tall from the tip of the glass bulb to the very bottom of the metal base, but other bulbs with the same base size and shape can be too tall for use.

Nitelight Bulb Brightness

Night Light Bulb Brightness Levels

Bulb Wattage - Make sure you are selecting the correct wattage. Candelabra-shape bulbs can be 4W, 5W, 7W, 15W, 40W, 60W or more.

Brightness - The three popular incandescent night light bulb wattages (4W, 5W, 7W) are now being replaced with equivalent  LED bulbs that are generally just as bright but which use 1/10 the amount of energy.

*4W Bulbs (Incandescent shown)
*5W Bulbs (0.5W LED shown)
*7W Bulb (0.75W LED shown)

Night Light Base Types

Night Light Base Types

While incandescent bulbs typically work with all nightlight base types, many LED bulbs cannot be used in automatic or photosensor bases, nor in enclosed night light fixtures.

*Manual On/Off Bases - A small toggle or rocker switch is pushed to control the fixture.
*Rotating Bases - Allows you to plug in a night light upside down or sideways; uses the same wattage bulb.
*Automatic Light Sensor Bases - Comes on at dusk or always stays on in dim locations; typically requires a higher-wattage bulb for an equivalent brightness.
*Photosensor / Motion Sensor Bases - Bulky units that come on when movement is detected.
